Philipp’s global brand and agency career also spans roles as Brand Manager for Mercedes-Benz, Vice President and Global Business Director at DDB Worldwide, and Head of Strategy at Omnicom’s premiere branding firm Siegel + Gale.

He has led purpose transformation and growth projects for major organizations and global brands including Sephora, PepsiCo, Reebok, Volkswagen, Southwest Airlines, Frito Lay, LG, Condé Nast, and more.

Philipp shared with us his perspective on Purpose-driven brands and tips for leaders. We also peaked into his passions outside of the Conspiracy of Love.

1. What Purpose-Driven brand or business do you admire and why?

The brands I admire most are those that put Purpose at the center of their organization and combine positive societal impact with growing their business. There are many good examples of brands that grow through purpose, but the ones I am most impressed by are Patagonia with their commitment to environmental activism and longevity of their products, Microsoft and Apple and how they are driving new growth through making their products more useful and accessible to people with disabilities, REI and how they combine stewardship for the outdoors with engaging their community to spend time outside, and one of our current clients, Sephora, who are committed to making the beauty industry more inclusive. All these brands really use purpose as a driver for their business, inspire and engage all stakeholders, and build internal cultures that attract and retain people who perform at their full potential because they find deep meaning in their work.

2. What book have you read recently that inspired you most and why?

Recently I read ’The Confident Mind’ by Dr. Nate Zinsser, about mastering mental toughness and self-belief to be able to realize human potential. It’s written for athletes and professionals in all areas of work and play, and I keep thinking about how these principles could be applied to entire organizations to help them fully realize their potential for impact and growth. I also always listen to the podcast PIVOT with Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway, which covers tech, business, and societal topics, and I love how the two hosts openly debate their often different points of view in respectful but candid ways. I think we need more open debates across the key issues of our time to overcome polarization, group-think, and opinion bubbles.

3. What advice do you have for Purpose-Driven leaders?

Push for depth in understanding your organizations or team’s ’superpower', have conviction in how you drive impact, and obsess over clarity in how you communicate a vision that can inspire and empower organizations to change.

4. What's your area of focus outside of Conspiracy of Love? Where is your passion and what other interesting projects are you involved in?

I am an avid outdoor adventurer (sailing, camping, hiking) and I try to create the same passion for nature with my two young daughters. Lately, I have also realized how important daily moments of connection with my local community and friends are, so one of my New Year’s resolutions is more time with the people I care about, ideally in nature. I have a few other personal projects brewing.
